N Scale Model Train Layout - Modular Model Railroad from Germany with Diesel Locomotives

This modular model railway layout was constructed by the German model railroader Karl-Heinz Friedel. In October 2018, he presented his N gauge layout at the famous model railway exhibition in Leipzig, Germany. Karl-Heinz started railway modelling in 1994. At that time, the first two segments were constructed. In 1995, he built two additional modules. Thus, the N scale layout grew year by year up to 28 segments with a total length of more than 29 meters.

The basic framework of the model railroad layout, which is called “Karlsberg”, consists of 16 mm thick blockboard panels. The rails are laid on a 3 mm cork track bed or cork rail bed made by Tillig Company, Germany. In total, there are 105 meters of Roco rails and Peco tracks. Railway signals and Semaphore signals are made by Viessmann Company, Germany. The railway lines were also equipped with start-up and brake decoders from Uhlenbrock Company, Germany. These decoders are responsible for a smooth start and realistic braking of model trains.

The N gauge layout by Karl-Heinz Friedel was built in the style of the German railway epoch III (1945-1970) and epoch IV (1965-1990), because it allows a larger variety of train sets for driving. While model railroading Karl-Heinz spends great importance to authenticity: Because no catenary is installed on the layout, no electric locomotives are used.
