In this video, we see the model train diorama built by Dutch model railroader Piet van Oorschot. The model railway diorama is called “Piets Pieck Plein” and depicts a market square with many small stores and beautiful houses, with a streetcar or tramway running between them. The ultimate goal of “Piets Pieck Plein” is not a perfect but a cozy looking narrow gauge model train layout. Most of the houses are entirely self-built using wood, plastic sheet, paper and clay. Furthermore, the miniature world in 1/45 scale is based on drawings and paintings by the Dutch artist Anton Franciscus Pieck.

Anton Franciscus Pieck (1895-1987) was a painter, artist and graphic artist. His works are noted for their nostalgic or fairy tale-like character and are widely popular, appearing regularly on cards and calendars. Anton Franciscus Pieck is also known for being the first designer of the famous Dutch theme park Efteling.

It is precisely this fairy tale-like character that the Dutch railway enthusiast Piet van Oorschot, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, would like to present with his small model railroad layout. Piet van Oorschot has worked on his model railway layout for about 20 years. During this time he has developed a number of techniques for designing fairy tale-like buildings, that are always constructed with a detailed interior.

Due to the illness (multiple sclerosis), his mobility deteriorated noticeably and four years ago he could no longer use his hands for modeling. At the moment, he is in a wheelchair and can only move his head. Many friends helped him to complete his model rail layout. He has mentioned all his friends and helpers by name on his impressive website, see www.voorschot.nu. His great wish was to present his miniature world at an international model train exhibition. Therefore, his model train diorama was exhibited at the famous model railway exhibition “On TraXS 2024” in Utrecht, Nederlands.

Piet van Oorschot tells us about his model train diorama: “Without the spontaneous efforts of family members and friends, it would never have become such a beautiful model train layout. The result and the process leading up to it have contributed to an enormous amount of extra joy in life. For that I am extremely grateful to all of them! They are all heroes and they are dear to me.”
